A View from the Bridge with The Touring Consortium Theatre Company
Isn't that just a gorgeous view of the Brooklyn bridge?? Stunning.
In a little less than three weeks I will be joining the touring cast of The Touring Consortium's A View from the Bridge. To say I'm excited to be joining them in Darlington would be an understatement. This will be my first straight play in a long time, like since my teens. I've acted in operas, musicals, even film, but it's been way too long since I've been in a play. So when I got an email through the Darlington Operatic Society about an audition for community cast members in A View from the Bridge, I jumped at the opportunity! Without a doubt in my mind, I wanted to audition.
This audition was so easy and relaxing. Probably the most relaxed I have ever felt in an audition, by far. I mean it. I arrived at the Darlington Civic Theatre and was told to wait in the corridor near the dressing rooms and just outside of the stage entrance. A few faces I recognised from having done Sister Act in the Civic Theatre with the Darlington Operatic Society. I think I waited for about 10 minutes before I was called in to audition. I walked out on to the stage, that was set up for Regeneration by Pat Barker, and met Neale Birch, the director of The Touring Consortium Theatre Company. We exchanged greetings then he gave me a rucksack (backpack). He said, "I have this bulldog clip (binder clip as I know it) and you're going to look in the rucksack for it. It's not in there, but you don't know that. You just need to look for it, because I've asked you for one." So, I did. At first I looked quite calmly, as you do when you know you have what they're asking for, then I started to panic. In my head I had decided that I was having a bad day and I just wanted ONE thing to work for me. Just one. So determined to look for this clip, I searched quite aggressively. I was determined. Haha. Well, thank goodness Neale stopped me because, I didn't find it. Hahaha! But he already knew that.
I am really growing to appreciate Arthur Miller and his work. I read The Crucible in school, but to re-read it today takes on an entirely different meaning for me. I had never read A View from the Bridge before this audition, but I think it would have been better this way. Reading plays like this as an adult have had more of an impact for me. It's incredible how the older I become the more appreciation I have for the sacrifices of my parents and even grandparents. I'll expand more on this in later blog posts.
